Banking your baby’s cord blood is an option for families. The procedure is done after your baby has been born (and the cord been cut) by drawing the blood out of the cord before the placenta delivers. There are 2 ways that this can be accomplished and as your due date approaches we will talk with you more about what is appropriate for you.
Canadian Blood Services – Cord Blood Program
This is a public banking program, run by Canadian Blood Services, who also run the blood donation program in Canada. Cord blood contains lots of stem cells that can be used to treat diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma and aplastic anemia. The civic hospital is one of five hospitals in Canada where this program is being run.

There are multiple private banking facilities that you can sign up with to bank your babies cord blood for future use by your family. You can find these online and must organize them ahead of time. We will collect the sample for you.
